What it is

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark. Unlike AHAs, it is oil-soluble, which allows it to penetrate into pores and dissolve the sebum and debris that cause congestion.

How it works

It loosens the bonds between dead skin cells (desmosomes), encouraging them to shed more evenly. Its oil-solubility lets it work inside follicles where AHAs cannot reach, making it uniquely effective for blackheads and clogged pores.

Best for

  • Oily or acne-prone skin types
  • Blackheads and non-inflammatory comedones
  • Whiteheads and congested pores
  • Mild to moderate breakouts

Use with caution if

  • Aspirin allergy (salicylic acid is a salicylate)
  • Dry or sensitive skin — start with very low concentrations (0.5%)
  • Combining with other exfoliants (AHA or physical) without a tolerance introduction period

Layering notes

Use 2–3× per week. Apply to clean, dry skin. Do not combine with AHAs in the same routine step until your skin is accustomed. Always follow with moisturizer and SPF in the morning.
