Vitamin C

What it is

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is a potent antioxidant and the most bioavailable form of vitamin C for skin. It is naturally found in skin but depletes with UV exposure and aging.

How it works

It neutralizes free radicals generated by UV and pollution, inhibits melanin synthesis (reducing dark spots), and is a required co-factor for collagen production. It also works synergistically with vitamin E and SPF.

Best for

  • Morning routine — pairs with SPF for enhanced UV protection
  • Dull, uneven, or post-sun-damaged skin
  • Prevention of dark spots from sun exposure

Use with caution if

  • L-ascorbic acid is unstable and oxidizes quickly — check for yellow/orange discoloration
  • Very sensitive or reactive skin may prefer gentler derivatives (ascorbyl glucoside)

Layering notes

Apply in the morning before SPF. L-ascorbic acid is most effective at pH 3.5 or lower — wait 15–20 minutes before applying other products or use derivative forms. Can be layered with niacinamide at normal concentrations.
